Once administered, protection from the shingles vaccine should last at least 9 years. Two doses, administered 2 to 12 months apart, are required for long-term protection.
Who can receive the vaccine?
- Shingrix, the vaccine that protects against shingles (Herpes Zoster), is offered free of charge to adults 75 years of age and older and immunocompromised adults 18 years of age and older.
- These individuals can be vaccinated regardless of whether they have had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine.
- While the shingles vaccine is also recommended for adults 50 to 74 years old, it is not free. These individuals can make an appointment in selected community pharmacies.
