" I was referred to Dr. Baltzan at Saint Mary’s Hospital on October 1st, 2024 for suspected lung cancer. I was enrolled in the Fast Track Treatment Program, and within six weeks, the dedicated nurses and doctors efficiently completed all necessary exams and a biopsy.

On November 12th, 2024, I was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma with an ALK mutation and started treatment immediately. The medical team’s professionalism, efficiency, and compassionate care under this program have been outstanding. I am deeply grateful for their amazing work and support during this challenging time." " My husband was recently diagnosed with cancer and as we began navigating this new chapter in our lives we were made aware of this new program available to patients.  We were asked if we’d be interested and were more than pleased to be included.  As this is still an ongoing process, the nurse navigator who is the liaison in the oncology department has truly been a very helpful resource for us.

From the first contact they have been very helpful in providing support, additional information, co-ordination of appointments and/or follow ups and even a morale booster when needed.

We have had much support from both the oncology doctor and the nurse. I am very appreciative of this service and hope that it will continue to grow and develop as I’m certain that it will be of great value to future patients."  Giovanna C.

"Unbeknownst to me, while pursuing a solution to a problem with my Proximal Phalanx. I was directed to be examined by nuclear medicine at the Glen because I had pain in my chest. Relieved to know that my heart was perfect, I was shaken to the core to be informed that there was a mass in the space between my lungs and my heart.

I was referred to Dr. Baltzan at St Mary’s pulmonary/oncology unit and it was lucky that I did! I had the good fortune of meeting not only the finest of doctors but a man full of compassion and empathy for my situation; from bringing me a tissue when I sobbed in front of him, to assuring me that there were ways to resolve my acute medical issues.

The efficient and timely manner in which he proceeded, gave me hope. I had a PET scan, a breathing test, lung and uterine biopsies.

Throughout all this, his assistants, Melissa and Catherine, were attentive, caring and most helpful – particularly Melissa who kept me on track with all my appointments and exactly how to navigate them.

This team has truly held me and continues to hold me in a heart-warming grip. It has made a great difference in my ability to cope with situation. Thank you with all my heart. " Tamara B.

My role as nurse navigator is to support you along the way of your workup for suspicious lung lesions. This can consistent of answering questions you may have, explaining tests that have been ordered and advocating for your needs. I also offer a comforting presence as navigating through the unknown during the rapid investigation process can be stressful.  As a nurse navigator, I work in direct collaboration with the pneumologists, administrative agents and various departments to shorten delays and ensure no one falls through the cracks of our healthcare system.”
