When and Where to Seek Care: Practical Alternatives to the Emergency!

The CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal wishes to remind you that when it comes to your healthcare needs, there are a number of options that are oftentimes quicker and more convenient than the Emergency Department. For minor aches and pains, mild symptoms or common health issues, there are convenient solutions nearby. Learn about the best options for getting the care you need without having to wait at the Emergency!

1. Call 811 for quick medical advice

Info-Santé 811 is a valuable resource for 24/7 health advice. By dialling 811, you can speak to a qualified nurse who will assess your situation and determine whether you should go to the Emergency or if there is a more suitable alternative for you. Calling this number can often help resolve a number of minor health issues remotely.

2. Pharmacists, your local healthcare ally

Pharmacists provide a wide range of services that can meet many of your health needs. Whether it’s for mild pain, fever, advice on taking medication, vaccines or emergency contraception, pharmacists can offer guidance, advice and can even prescribe certain medications. Before you go to the Emergency, be sure to consult your pharmacist!

3. Use the Primary Care Access Point (GAP)

The Primary Care Access Point (GAP) is a digital service through which you can make an appointment in a clinic for a non-urgent health issue. Whether you have a family doctor or not, you can secure a medical consultation in a clinic near you through the GAP. This service is ideal for someone who needs a medical follow-up within a reasonable timeframe.

4. Self-care and online tools: practical solutions

For minor health issues and routine care, self-care is sometimes the best option. Online tips and guides are available to help you manage everyday ailments, such as mild cough, muscle pain and minor scrapes. These resources contain reliable information on how to safely take care of yourself at home.
