Our Expertise

Then and Now

Health technology assessment (HTA) teams, known in French as Évaluations des technologies et des modes d’intervention en santé et en services sociaux (ÉTMIS-SS), are recognized internationally for their ability to guide decision makers in selecting effective and safe technologies and interventions that meet the needs of the community. They play a strategic role in optimizing the way resources are used, and ensure that the high standards for the safety and equity of the care are respected.

The first HTA initiatives in Québec took place in the early 1980s. They looked to international models address challenges specific to our healthcare system. Since then, they have become an essential part of the decision-making process. They help to strike a balance between innovation and the effective and responsible management of resources.

Given the rapid evolution of technological innovations, collaborating with an HTA team enhances managers’ ability innovate and lead effectively. By relying on rigorous analyses and objectives, they minimize the risks of implementing ineffective or costly solutions and display their ability to make informed decisions even under circumstances that are complex and continuously evolving.

Emerging Technologies and Us

Technological innovations, such as artificial intelligence, are evolving at a remarkable pace. In such a context, HTA teams are a key element to ensuring resources are used efficiently. By providing rigorous and context-specific analyses to the organization’s key decision-makers, we help inform decisions on the choice and integration of truly relevant technologies.

Thanks to the HTA team, managers and other CIUSSS stakeholders have reliable, relevant and quality data to help prioritize those new technologies with the greatest potential clinical, financial and organizational impact.
