Medical Aid in Dying: An End-of-Life Option
Medical Aid in Dying: An End-of-Life Option
Medical aid in dying (MAiD) involves the administration of medications by a doctor, at the patient’s request, to relieve their suffering by hastening death.
In Québec, legislation permitting MAiD came into force in 2015 and continues to evolve. It gives the individual the right to choose when to die, with the support of healthcare professionals.
Current Eligibility Criteria
Persons who wish to receive MAiD must satisfy the following eligibility criteria:
- Be insured within the meaning of the Health Insurance Act;
- Be of full age (at least 18 years of age);
- Be able to give informed consent;
- Have a serious and incurable illness;
- Experience constant and unbearable physical or psychological suffering that cannot be relieved in a manner the patient deems tolerable;
- Be in an advanced state of irreversible decline in capacity; whether their natural death is reasonably foreseeable or not.
Individuals who would like to request MAiD must fill out a form in the presence of a health professional. Once completed, the request must be sent to the MAiD Clinical Coordination.
