Pertussis: the essentials for understanding and taking action

In recent weeks, the number of whooping cough cases has increased in Montreal. Despite the end of school, this disease could continue to spread.

Symptoms:

First few daysAfter 1 to 6 weeks 
  • Runny nose;
  • Cough;
  • Mild fever;
  • Watery eyes

Severe cough that can cause :

  • Vomiting;
  • Nausea;
  • Difficulty breathing;
  • Pauses in breathing (apnea lasting a few seconds);
  • "Whoop” sound after coughing.

 

Babies under 1 year old are especially at risk for serious complications

Prevention:

Vaccination is the best way to protect against pertussis, as it reduces the severity of symptoms. You can make an appointment on Clic-Santé to obtain the pertussis vaccine.
