Lakeshore General Hospital: A new modular Emergency Department as of May 15

Last May 13, Health Minister Christian Dubé, joined by our President and CEO Dan Gabay, enjoyed a tour of the Lakeshore General Hospital’s new modular building ahead of its official opening. The modular building will be home, among other things, to the new Emergency Department.

The new Emergency Department is located on the ground floor of a two-storey modular building with a total floor space of 33 777 square feet.

The new Emergency Department is set to open its doors to the public on May 15, 2024.

This modular building is a transitional phase that will provide users and staff with a more suitable environment until the project to build a new Emergency Department for the hospital is completed. That project is slated to begin in 2025.  It will also play a role in reconfiguration projects planned for the hospital.

In addition to the Emergency Department, located on the ground floor, the first floor of the modular building will be home to a new university-affiliated Family Medicine Group (U-FMG), a project being developed together with McGill University.  Among its various functions, the U-FMG will provide care for patients who come to the Emergency Department with issues that are not urgent (priority P4 and P5). Those patients will be redirected toward resources that are more appropriate to their needs.

The first floor of the modular building will also be home to the Rapid Access Clinic (RAC), which also helps improve patient flow within the hospital.

The U-FMG and the RAC will be open to patients as of May 27, 2024.

This modular building provides a modern new care setting that meets all norms, improves safety, ensures better access and quality of care and services for the community.  Clinical teams will have a more appropriate and pleasant working environment and improved teaching areas.

A heartfelt thank you to all the employees and partners who helped us deliver this project within a few short months.

We would also like to thank the Lakeshore General Hospital Foundation for its generous support, which contributed to the purchase of equipment.
