Long Term Care

Among the residential and long-term care resources available in Montreal, there are public and private residential and long-term care centres, intermediate resources, private residences for seniors and other residential and long-term care resources that offer living environments that are adapted to a diversified clientele.

All decisions regarding the placement of seniors with loss of autonomy are based, first and foremost, on assessment of their abilities. The assessment provides the means for ascertaining their needs and referring them to the resources that meet their needs.

When home support services can no longer meet the needs of an individual with significantly decreased autonomy, social workers at the Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre can help make a request for residential placement.

What is an intermediate resource?

An intermediate resource is a private business affiliated with a public health institution, in this case the Montréal West Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre (MWI IUHSSC), which is responsible for the quality of care.

The resource is called “intermediate” because it is a form of residential environment suited to the needs of people whose health no longer permits them to live at home but who do not require the constant supervision of a residential and long-term care centre (CHSLD). For example, nursing care is not provided in the evening or at night in an intermediate resource.
