School Services

CLSCs and schools regularly work together to facilitate access to health care services for young people in their areas. Many CLSC professionals intervene directly in schools, working with teachers and supporting them to best respond to the needs of their mutual clientele: elementary and secondary school children.

Nurses promote the health of young people within the schools and play a greater role in terms of prevention and health education. They offer workshops on healthy lifestyles and hygiene, contraception, healthy and responsible sexual life, among other topics. They also offer support and advice to parents with children suffering from medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and allergies.

Dental hygienists apply the national preventive dental services program to elementary school children. The program provides:

  • dental screening for all kindergarten children
  • individual dental follow-up for children vulnerable to cavities from kindergarten to grade 2 inclusively
  • dental sealants are applied, mainly in grade 2, in schools targeted by the Montréal West Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre
  • healthy dental hygiene activities are promoted in schools with children aged 0 to 5 years during CLSC activities and throughout the community

This approach is meant to complement the dental hygiene care provided at home and during visits to the dentist. Its purpose is to limit cavities and to prevent new ones from appearing.
